Sydney Sights

Friday June 2 - Late Morning

After arriving in Sydney from Cairns we took a shuttle to our hostel and dropped our gear off. Then we set out to explore Sydney. Our hostel was right in the middle of the city, allowing us to explore a lot of the sights. So we checked the map and headed down towards the harbor to visit the Harbor Bridge, Opera House and Rocks areas.

Queen Elizabether Building We started walking down a main street towards the harbor. While walking we passed a bunch of neat buildings like this one. This is the Queen Elizabeth building.
Indoor Mall We also stopped to check this place out. It is kind of an indoor mall and very fancy. We didn’t spend a whole lot of time here because by this point in the trip we did not have all that much money left and we also wanted to see the rest of Sydney.
Indoor Mall 2 Another shot of the indoor mall.
Rocks Finally we got down to the area known as ‘The Rocks’. This is an area with a lot of small shops, restaurants, pubs, etc. It is also the area where Sydney was started.
Rocks 2 Another view of a street in The Rocks.
Rocks 3 You can see here why the area is called The Rocks. A lot of the older buildings were built on these rocky outcroppings.
Harbor Bridge Here is a great shot of the Harbor Bridge. This was taken shortly after we ate lunch at a little italian sidewalk bistro, where we sat at a table ont he sidewalk and had pretty much this view for our meal. The food was good and although it was a little chilly, we had a great lunch.
Seargent Major Row This was across the street from where we ate lunch. It had a sign up proclaiming itself ‘Seargeant Majors Row’.

Bridge The Rocks extend all of the way around this point in the harbor and this shows how close the Harbor bridge sits to this area. We had to walk under and around the bridge in order to get up on it.
Bridge 2 This is still The Rocks area, but we are on the other side of the bridge heading towards stairs to get up on the bridge.
Opera House A view of the Opera House from the bridge.
Harbor Bridge 2 Here we are at one of the large brick pylons that you can see in the bridge pictures. We could ahve paid $8 a piece to climb the pylon and look around, but we decided that we were high enough and we wanted to see the Opera House. Also, if you look at the picture you can actually see people up on top of the bridge. If we wanted to pay a couple of hundred a piece we could have done that tour.
Opera House 2 Another view of the Opera House.
Bridge View These next few views are as we are walking back around the harbor towards the opera house.
Bridge View 2 Another view of the bridge.
Bridge View 3 A closeup of the bridge.
Opera House 3 A shot of the opera house.
Opera House 4 We walked up to the front of the opera house before going on the tour and it was a good thing because it started raining as we started the tour, so it was nice to see the outside while it and we were dry.
Bridge from Opera House This is a view of the bridge from the opera house. I was standing just to the right of the left pylon when taking the previous shots of the opera house from the bridge.
